Sid has guided us to places in and near Kyoto during our previous visits to Japan; it was good to see him again. We stopped at a small restaurant for lunch, partly so that I could sample a local dish that consists of rice wrapped in a thin layer of fried tofu. The restaurant turned out to not have an English menu, so perhaps to expedite matters Sid asked whether it was okay for him to choose for me. I said “yes, of course,” and then about 1.5 seconds later wish I’d appended the caveat “…as long as you don’t order anything too weird.” There are limits to my sense of adventure when it comes to food, and obviously I couldn’t expect Sid (or anyone else) to know those limits.

Fortunately he ordered something fairly straightforward. Along with the aforementioned wrapped rice arrived big bowls of steaming noodles and soup. Just as I was putting what I took to be a slice of beef into my mouth, Sid mentioned that it was duck. Eating duck isn’t unheard of in the U.S. but I can’t say that I’d ever had it before. It was good, though; it was somewhat similar to the dark part of turkey. The tofu-wrapped rice was interesting also. The rice was lightly seasoned with vinegar and black sesame seeds, and the tofu was faintly sweet.

I’ve fallen behind on posting photos, obviously. Here is a link to the batch we’ve just put up.
