Studio Nebula Photos

Not long ago Chris posted a photo on his blog of his current workspace, which generated some amount of interest and a thread of comments about why people find it interesting to look at other people’s gear and stuff. This included at least one query about my workspace. (Hi, Jeff.) So, here are a few photos taken earlier today. It’s possibly worth mentioning that the lighting in that room is a little dim (which is actually fine with me, under most circumstances) and my camera was struggling a bit.

Here’s an overview:

Yes, that’s a cat at the lower edge. Her name is Widget, in the somewhat unlikely event that you haven’t heard about her already. Here’s a somewhat closer shot of the desk:

For the gearheads in the audience, here’s the equipment rack:

Note that these photos are hosted by Flickr, so if you click on any of them you can go to their corresponding Flickr page and see them at different sizes, including their original 6Mpix resolution. This should enable you to zoom in obsessively and look at stuff like the Mobile Suit Gundam figures perched next to the SST-282. This also marks the beginning of the end of my use of Gallery, the software I’ve used to put photos on my site. Gallery’s nice enough but it’s a pain to keep up with their updates (partly because their updating process tends to not work) and I’m always colliding with the upload-size limit. (There’s a nice exmaple example of getting what you pay for: Gallery is free but it drives me bats, so I just paid for a Pro Flickr account because it worked seamlessly the first time I tried it.)

Go ahead, try to summarize yourself in a sentence or two.

  1. Wow, that’s an amazing effects rack. I had to google the Ursa Major. Has that inspired some AD plugs?

I’ve always wanted a Microwave 1, though I’m not sure why. I need some digilog in my system.

    Thanks for posting.

  2. I bought the SST-282 (on eBay, after months of waiting) partly with the idea that it might inspire a new plug-in. It hasn’t led directly to any AD products, though. It’s an odd box. I need to spend more time with it; I feel as though I haven’t really gotten to know it well.
I’ve owned a Microwave II and XT also. I ended up keeping the original partly because it’s the only one of the family that has tuning tables and partly because of its analog filters. I’m not sure that it actually sounds better than the II/XT but somehow I’m more attached to it than I became to the other two, possibly because it was the first one I bought. I’m somewhat tempted by the Blofeld, but it’s not as though I need more synths. (Just out of sight of the photos, to the left of the rack, is a keyboard stand with a JD-800, a Z1, and an Access Indigo.)

  3. Ha, too funny… I’ve had that exact same 3-piece modular presswood desk for more than 10 years. 2 of the parts are sitting right here, the curvy bit is down in the garage. Yay OfficeMax.

  4. Why spend money on expensive office furniture when you can buy cheap furniture and use the rest of the money for gear? 🙂
Actually, in true DIY fashion, that’s modified OfficeMax furniture you’re looking at. The curvy piece used to be in the corner the way it’s supposed to be, but that put the modular partly in front of the window which blocked a lot of light and wasted space. So I sawed off the sides of the top to make it shaped more like a regular desk and put it parallel to the main desk. The keyboard drawer on the main desk is considerably wider than standard. I used a piece of shelving to replace the stock piece, giving me enough room on the drawer for a mouse, a large “ergonomic” keyboard, and other stuff like ShuttlePro controller. I can fit a four-octave keyboard on it, too. Finally, the desk top is flipped over. Normally it has a bevel along the front edge–I guess to make it more comfy to lean on with your forearms or something–but that wastes valuable space. Flipping it upside-down to put the bevel underneath gained me enough room to squeeze my Virus Indigo in front of my monitors.
So yeah, yay OfficeMax indeed. The chair, on the other hand, is not cheap. Only the best for my butt! 🙂
